Fluid lines and dramatic spaces make the Holland America Nieuw Statendam a modern beauty. The second in the line of Pinnacle-class cruise ships, its design draws inspiration from the elegant curves of musical instruments. When not relaxing in well-appointed suites or staterooms, guests will have a multitude of innovative dining and entertainment options—from Rudi’s Sel de Mer to Nami Sushi to the Rolling Stone Rock Room, B.B. King’s Blues Club, and the visually stunning two-level World Stage.

YesThird Holland America cruise, second on this ship. We were more impressed this time then on our first cruise on Nieuw Statendam. The Pinnacle dinner was superb, and the "regular" food options were many and of very fine quality. My wife and I both felt the food was improved from the year before. The options were plentiful and there was not one item we would not get again. The stewards we had were friendly and provided excellent service--the room and bathroom were always clean and fresh. All the staff were helpful, smiled, and greeted you. This was a relaxing and refreshing cruise experience.

YesThe staff were all excellent and worked hard. That includes the dining room staff, Lido Deck staff, stewards, etc. They were all excellent. The food was good, but needed more of a variety. For example, lobster when in New England, Blueberries served in some way, either ice cream or dessert, when in Maine. The entertainment was not good at all. Only two nights were pretty good with a comedian, and all the other nights not good at all. It was easy to get an appointment for the ship's doctor due to an eye infection. The wait was not bad, and the medical staff friendly and professional.

YesI highly recommend the Nieuw Statendam. It is a lovely ship. The Pinnacle Grill’s atmosphere and food were excellent. The dinning room food was exceptional. We didn’t have a bad meal. Our waiter Ramos was super friendly and very accommodating. Our favorite port of call was Amber Cove. We rented a cabana overlooking the pool area and spent the day enjoying the facility.

Slightly clumsy dining arrangements, some mediocre mealsRECOMMENDED
YesAfter sailing on Koningsdam 2 years ago, we felt at home on the Nieuw Statendam. Slightly different arrangement on the Music Walk, but still one of the highlights. Cruise director Vince has introduced EXC talks on several subjects from the history of rum to off-shore banking. All of these are well researched and presented with humor as well as facts. Half Moon Cay was as good as ever.

Great food with good options for vegans; Super-duper employeesCONS
Entertainment, crowded lido deck and an overrun private islandRECOMMENDED
No<div>Barely broken in (I understand this was the third voyage, and I will say those YouTube reviews were not particularly instructive. Holland America's attention to food is a strong point, and I will state with confidence that your vegan/vegetarian clients will be pleased with the options. My college-age son is rather extreme in terms of that diet. A maitre d' provided us with a menu, from which he ordered the next day's dinner the night before. The kid was well-satisfied and pleased with the food (as well he should be, since I paid for it). Particularly excellent is that the waitstaff (fantastic! fantastic! the best I have experienced at sea, though as a reference I've only sailed the fairly standard lines (Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Costa) knew that we had a vegan in our dining group -- and we had the "anytime dining") Also notable is that even when we showed up in the main dining room at peak times, we experienced waits of no longer than four or five minutes even with the anytime dining. Meals were superbly plated -- good to look at as well as tasty; there were just a couple of misses, with chewy beef dishes and a sweet-and-sour shrimp). The desserts were delicious and, in many cases, intricately assembled. Extraordinary. We were less than pleased with the activities and entertainment. The "World Stage" setup with LED screens is a bit limiting, and if you like the old-fashioned productions with singers and dancers, props and a small band, you'll be quite disappointed. The guest performers -- a "mentalist/magician" who blew his big act, and a comedian were bombs, and embarrassingly so; a German juggler came out better, and the house dance ensemble offered two shows with varied music and styles. They were the best dancers I have ever seen on a cruise ship. A downside is that two nights of a seven-day sailing were largely repeats. Holland America seems to be putting its money on the Music Walk venues -- the Rolling Stone Rock Room, Billboard Lounge (dueling pianists), Lincoln Center Stage (pop classical, so-so ensemble of college music major capability) and the best by my reckoning the BB King Blue's Club. The latter ensemble, with two horns, was tight. The Rolling Stone Rock Room offered up a tired fare of "classic rock": "Born to be Wild", Springsteen and Mellencamp. I'd put it on par with a club bar band. I like rock, but things got loud -- LOUD -- at times. I would have enjoyed a steel drum outfit on the lido deck -- which you will not find on Nieuw Statendam. If I had any bone to pick, it would be Holland America's double-booking at Half Moon Cay-- as its two biggest ships, the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam were tendered on the same day. Too crowded. The beach was a constant stream of folks, and long lines greeted anyone wanting the subpar (not at all up to the line's standard, even accounting for the fact that it's private island fare) buffet there. Shame. It didn't help that our ship was filled beyond the 2650 or so passengers it lists as typical. However, the staff managed to keep pace. They, and the food, are what make Holland America exemplary.</div>
