In the western and central valleys of Bhutan lies Amankora, which derives its name from aman meaning ‘peace’ in Sanskrit and kora or ‘circular pilgrimage’ in Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language. Amankora is not just one hotel, but rather a unique series of lodges spread throughout Bhutan’s valleys, each with its own character and setting. To best experience all that Bhutan has to offer, Aman can plan a tailor-made, all-inclusive journey including one or more of the Amankora lodges located in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey or Bumthang.

Activities around Amankora

T R E K S throughout the five valleys cater to all levels of ability. Amankora will tailor a trekking itinerary suited to guests’ preferences and length of stay in Bhutan. Overnight treks can also be organized. In Paro, hike up to the dramatic ruins of Drukyel Dzong and continue on to the Paro Chhu before heading through beautifully-terraced fields of rice and buckwheat with village hamlets dotting a richly-forested backdrop. Follow the trail of one of the most frequented pilgrimages in the Himalaya and hike up to the revered 7th century ‘Tiger’s Nest’ or Taktsang Lhakhang. Drive up Paro Valley with a gradual ascent to the 4,000m Cheli La Pass. The all-day trek offers incredible views of not only the Haa and Paro Valleys, but also the Himalayan backdrop that runs along the border with Tibet. In Punakha hike along the banks of Mo Chhu through terraces of rice, chillies and cabbage, to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a three-storey monument housing beautiful and complex paintings built by the Queen of Bhutan. Cheri Goemba in Thimphu is a 25-minute hike across one of the Kingdom’s oldest cantilever bridges and up a steep trail. During a stay in Gangtey, soak up the beauty of the Phobjikha Valley with an afternoon stroll. In Tang, an offshoot valley from Bumthang, a short hike to the well-preserved Ugen Choeling Palace reveals cultural treasures within its museum.
S P I R I T U A L pilgrimages in Bhutan offer guests both a humbling and enriching experience. For a safe pilgrimage through the Kingdom, receive a blessing and light Yak-butter lamps in the secluded Wangditse Lhakhang, and take time to reflect in the tranquillity of the ancient altar room. Visit Cheri Goemba, the first monastery established in Bhutan, and absorb the vibrant spiritual energy of the Goemba’s altar room through reflection or meditation. At the 7th century temple of Kyichu Lhakhang, have a long life blessing and Buddhist name bestowed. For further insight into Buddhism and the spirituality of the Bhutanese people, visit the National Museum, Paro Dzong and Dumtse Lhakhang.
A R C H E R Y is Bhutan’s national sport, with traditional bamboo to advanced Olympic compound bows in use. Tutors in the art of archery are available as is practice with a traditional bow.
F I S H I N G was originally introduced to Bhutan by an officer of the British military. A day spent in the river valleys offers anglers an opportunity to enjoy the pristine surroundings while enticing their wily quarries. Bhutan’s rivers are teeming with trout in large part because fish is not a traditional part of the Bhutanese diet. Equipment, guides and licenses can be arranged with advance notice.
G O L F can be enjoyed at Bhutan’s only official golf course, located in the heart of Thimphu. The rolling nine-hole course is set with a majestic backdrop of the capital’s administrative Tashichoe Dzong and the surrounding mountainscape. Tee times can be arranged by Amankora.
WHITE WATER RAFTING from September until May is possible in the Punakha Valley.During the earlier part of the season, trips provide an exhilarating ride through the deep river valleys. Later on in the season, the pace is more leisurely with an opportunity to admire the passing wildlife, farms, small villages and occasional dzong.

All suites at Amankora Lodges are very similar in design and layout. This allows guests a feeling of familiarity and comfort as though they are arriving home at each lodge as they continue their journey through the kindgom. In Amankora Punakha, 2 additional two-bedroom Mo Chhu Suites have recently been added, which can be reconfigured separately as 2 suites and 2 one-bedroom suites.

Suites at Amankora

Suites at Amankora feature a combined lounge and bedroom that is furnished with a king size bed, banquette window seat (which can be converted for triple occupancy) and reading chair. In one corner is the traditional Bukhari, wood burning stove which not only heats the suite but provides rustic charm. opening from the bedroom is a spacious bathroom with is dominated by a large terrazzo-clad bath, flanked on one side by twin vanities, walk in closet space and on the other side by enclosure for shower and commode.

Amankora Paro Lodge

Thirty minutes from Paro’s international airport, the lodge contrasts rustic with contemporary design, featuring natural rammed-earth walls and a gentle sloping roof. A lime-washed stone pavilion houses the Living and Dining Rooms, Library, Boutique and Outdoor Terrace. Behind the main cluster of buildings is the Spa which includes a sauna, steam room, five treatment rooms with hot stone baths, changing rooms and a glass-walled yoga suite. There are six dwellings with four suites each, two on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. The 24 suites are similar in design with a king-size bed, a traditional bukhari (wood-burning stove) and a large terrazzo-clad bath.

Amankora Thimphu Lodge

The lodge incorporates tall, white-washed stone buildings accessed through an enclosed entrance court. The Living and Dining Room features soaring ceilings and an outdoor dining deck with views of the nearby stream and surrounding forest. The spacious Library with its seating, writing and lounging areas, houses a collection of books on Bhutan and the surrounding Himalayan regions. The library can also be converted into a private Meeting and Conference Room, featuring the latest audio visual amenities. The Boutique specializes in a fine collection of Bhutanese textiles, Himalayan art and jewellery. The Spa includes three treatment rooms, a steam room and changing areas. Two dwellings house a total of 16 suites featuring a combined living and bedroom that includes a king-size bed, two reading chairs and a window banquette providing views across a landscaped courtyard or directly onto the nearby stream and pine forest. Room interiors feature wood panel and chocolate brown walls. The traditional bukhari is positioned between the bedroom and the bathroom with a shower, toilet and twin vanities. The suites are individually heated during cold winter months.

Amankora Punakha Lodge

Accessed by crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu, the lodge is centred by a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse built by a former Je Kempo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan). This quaint, three-storey structure with its preserved vegetable dye wall paintings is now a reception area with a Dining Room, traditional Altar Room, a courtyard for alfresco dining and a tea pavilion. Just beyond is the Spa with two treatment rooms, a steam room, changing areas and a yoga/meditation room. Eight suites, located in three rammed-earth dwellings, are situated in an orange orchard with views across the rice fields and up the Punakha Valley. The suites are identical to the design of the suites at Amankora Paro and feature wood-paneled interiors, a traditional bukhari, king-size bed, terrazzo-clad bath, shower, vanities and daybed. Suites are individually heated during the cooler winter months and air-conditioned in the summer months.

Amankora Gangtey Lodge

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the combined Living and Dining Room offer beautiful views over the expansive Phobjikha Valley. Spa facilities include two treatment rooms and changing areas. The eight suites are identical to those of Amankora Thimphu, offering an open plan bedroom and bathing area. The design combines wood panelling and chocolate brown walls, traditional bukhari, terrazzo-clad bath, shower, vanity and daybed offering views across the valley.

Amankora Bumthang Lodge

Overlooking established orchards and nestled near the grounds of one of Bhutan's royal palaces, the lodge offers a Library, comfortable Living Room, regal Dining Room and cozy Spa with three treatment rooms, a steam room and changing areas. Accessed through an impressive stone-clad hallway, 16 guest suites are situated in four separate dwellings, each containing two suites on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. Suites feature wood-paneled interiors, a traditional bukhari, king-size bed, terrazzo-clad bath, shower, twin vanities and daybed overlooking the courtyard, nearby Wangdichholing Palace and monastery.

The Dining Room in Amankora Paro

Arranged with large long tables for intimate communal concept dining, the Dining Room at Amankora Paro is surrounded by paneled wood and walls adorned with traditional cloud paintings that are part of the design language in many Bhutanese homes. In it’s heart is a fireplace that gives the space is cozy ambience while large French doors open into an additional outdoor dining deck and views of the Drukgyel Dzong and village.

The Dining Room in Amankora Thimphu

The space that form the Dining Room of Amankora Thimphu is a large indoor open-plan space marked by a couple of two-sided fireplaces in the middle. A large Outdoor Terrace adjacent to the Dining Room serves as a venue for alfresco dining.

With dramatic, dimmable lighting and wood paneling on all four sides as well as a lounge seating with panoramic windows overlooking the pine forest, the Dining Room (serving Bhutanese and International cuisine) has hosted Amankora Thimphu’s celebrated “Cooking the Clouds” Michelin Star Dinner Series where chefs from awarded restaurants from around the world come to showcase their take on Bhutanese food.

The ground floor of the farmhouse houses our dining room, offering a family-style dining experience with long oak tables and relaxing chairs. Here, a selection of Bhutanese and Western dishes are served in a homely fashion for everyone to share and partake.

The courtyard of the farmhouse opens onto fields of mint, wild hemp, orange, mango, banana, avocado and guava trees and the surrounding rice terraces with the Punakha Dzong nestled in the valley to the south. Weather-permitting, alfresco dining is available anytime. The farmhouse itself was built in the 1950’s and belonged to a former Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan before it was bequeathed to one of the royal queen mothers and finally transformed into the beating heart of Amankora Punakha.
The Dining Room in Amankora Gangtey

Boasting spectacular views of the valley, the Dining Room of Amankora Gangtey's lodge serves Bhutanese and Western cuisine with some must-try specialties such as yak meat. Anchored by a 2-sided fireplace in the middle, the space is set with panoramic glass windows on one side with lounge seating right next to the views. Two communal-style dining tables in the Dining Room are supplemented by alfresco dining in the Outdoor Terrace, the Patio and a special dinner experience in a converted farmer's potato shed.
The Dining Room in Amankora Bumthang

A long, narrow room with lofty ceilings and set with long tables echoing large, communal dinners in royal feasts in the early history of Bhutan, the Dining Room in Amankora Bumthang is a setting adept for formal dinners. Here, a mix of Bhutanese and International cuisine are served, featuring fresh produce and artisanal food such as Bumthang honey, local gouda cheese and apple cider.
Nestled between the lodge, a temple and the former royal home of the first and second kings of Bhutan, the Outdoor Terrace at Amankora Bumthang is a beloved alfresco dining venue for guests. On its heart is a stone courtyard with a firepit where lounge seating or dining tables can be set up for cocktails or a dramatic dinner warmed by firewood. Across the Terrace is the Sey Lhakhang Temple and the19th century Wangdicholing Palace, now home to a small number of monks and is being restored as a royal heritage museum.
