An intriguing and glittering past has led to Caruso, a Belmond Hotel on the Amalfi Coast, becoming the heavenly hideaway it is today. Its origins date from the 11th century, when a noble family was shipwrecked off Ravello en route to Constantinople. They built a palace high on the cliffs as a symbol of their survival. Over the centuries, features such as a splendid colonnade, lookout tower and marble columns were added.

In 1893, Pantaleone Caruso entered the story. The hotelier transformed the building into a relaxing retreat that attracted the likes of Virginia Woolf and, later, stars including Greta Garbo and Jackie Kennedy. The cocoon-like privacy that lured them is a strong part of the hotel's appeal today. Set in sublime Mediterranean gardens, it boasts unrivalled views over the coast and one of the world's most beautiful infinity pools.

The 50 majestic rooms and suites are beyond compare. Reached by marbled hallways, they captivate with stone vaulted ceilings, Italian antiques and vine-clad balconies. At the acclaimed Ristorante Belvedere, imaginative Neapolitan cuisine combines with fabled ocean views on a sun-splashed terrace. Magnificent frescoes decorate the cocktail bar. The colonnade is now home to an open-air, panoramic champagne bar. The spa offers Mediterranean-inspired rituals, which can also be enjoyed in a sea-view gazebo.

Tours of the coast are available in the hotel’s traditional wooden boat. Ravello’s world-famous music festival is an annual draw. Enticing tailor-made excursions include lemon grove tours, sunset cruises and Vespa rides around Naples.

Out and about with the Caruso

At Caruso we’re dreaming of next summer already. Which is why we’ve crafted a signature boat tour that will make everyone fall in love with the Amalfi Coast.

One of the best things to savor while on the coastline is without a doubt a local spaghetti with a world-renowned anchovy sauce called ‘colatura’, only produced in the tiny fishing village of Cetara.

The rich, amber-coloured nectar is still crafted to time-honoured methods. People say, once you’ve tried it, you can’t live without it.

To experience the dish in all its glory, after sailing towards Cetara, guests can take a seat at Ristorante Belvedere and savor delicious spaghetti with the famous sauce.

Garden View Room With Terrace

Double Superior Rooms are located in the main hotel building and offer an enchanting garden or village view. They are furnished with either a king-size or twin beds. The generous marble bathrooms have a separate shower cubicle, bathtub, bidet and double vanity basins. Three rooms are connecting.
Superior Sea View Junior Suite With Garden

Blending light, airy spaces with beautiful historic features, these suites in the main hotel building offer beautiful views of the Bay of Salerno from their terraces. By Train

Naples Central Railway Station (64 km - 40 miles), 60 minutes drive to the hotel. Trains arrive from Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome.

By Car

Fastest route: Take the Naples – Pompeii – Salerno highway. Exit at Angri. Follow the indications for “Valico di Chiunzi” and “Costiera Amalfitana”, reaching Ravello through the pass (valico).

Slower but more scenic route: Take the Naples – Pompeii – Salerno highway. Exit at “Vietri sul mare”. Follow the indications for “Costiera Amalfitana” and “Ravello”, touching Cetara, Maiori and Minori. This road is very panoramic, but can have a lot of traffic, especially at weekends and public holidays.
