Castello Banfi – Il Borgo is nestled into the homes that were build alongside the medieval fortress historically known as Poggio alle Mura. In the 17th and 18th centuries, when it became safe to live outside of the thick walls and locked gates but prudent to be close for protection. The Castello is the hospitality center of the 7100-acre (2850 hectares) vineyard estate. Guests are nurtured in a warm and refined environment with attention to detail. Culinary and cultural adventure, including cooking classes and sunset picnic, wine tastings, vineyards treks and sightseeing, as well as simple relaxation, are the hallmark of the property.

From Castello Banfi it is easily reachable by car some of the most famous towns in Tuscany, as Montalcino, Pienza or Montepulciano.

Starting from the closest, Montalcino, is a 16th Century village immersed in the breathtaking Val d’Orcia area and this Medieval town is full of artistic treasures. Don’t forget to visit the Abbey of Sant’Antimo which is 20 minutes away from our Castle.

Beyond doubt Pienza, east of Montalcino, is a must see when you visit the Region. The focal point for this World Heritage town is the trapezioidal main square where you can admire the secular Palazzo Piccolomini. Once you are here, stop and taste the unique sheep’s milk Pecorino cheese.

Under the powerful Medici family, Montepulciano reached its highest splendour. An unique and evocative atmosphere is offered by the main Piazza Grande, surrounded by the Duomo, the Palazzo Contucci and the Palazzo Comunale.

Directions

From Montalcino
20 kilometers (13 miles), approximately 20 minutes driving. Take SP 14 "Traversa dei Monti" direction Grosseto. After 15 kilometers (9 miles), turn right following the brown sign "Poggio alle Mura", before entering the village of S. Angelo Scalo. Drive 5 kilometers between the vineyards and you will reach Castello Banfi.

From Rome (city centre)
250 kilometers (155 miles), approximately 2.5 hours driving. Take Autostrada A1 north toward Firenze Exit Chiusi /Chianciano Terme (170 kilometers) following the sign to Chianciano Terme. Before entering Chianciano Terme, turn left following the sign to Montalcino/Grosseto. Then follow the direction from Montalcino above mentioned.

From Florence
130 kilometers (81miles), approximately 1.45 hours driving. From downtown Florence take the 4-lanes highway RA3 direction Siena. The entrance is at the traffic circle just after the Firenze-Impruneta exit of the Autostrada A1. If already on Autostrada A1, please exit at Firenze-Impruneta. Proceed to Siena.

From Siena
70 kilometers (44 miles), approximately 45 minutes driving Follow signs to Grosseto and proceed to SS 223Exit at Paganico Nord (45 km) Follow sing to Montalcino and to M. Amiata (brown one). Turn left at signs S. Angelo /Montalcino. Cross over the bridge and railroad tracks. Be careful: at the end of the bridge please mind the speed limit indicator. The speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour. After the entry which indicates the Banfi winery, turn left, following the signs for Castello Banfi (Poggio alle Mura) until arrival at the car park.

From Rome Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino Airport
230 kilometers (140 miles), approximately 2.5 hours driving Leaving airport, follow signs for Civitavecchia A12. Once in Civitavecchia follow direction to Grosseto. In Grosseto (170 Km) follow the sign to Siena (SS 223). Exit at Paganico Nord. Follow sign to Montalcino and to M. Amiata. Turn left following direction toward Sant'Angelo and Montalcino.
